Local residents had a convenient opportunity to rid themselves of unwanted documents thanks to a special shredding event courtesy of Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt Tuesday in Emporia.
The event was held as a part of National Consumer Protection Week and served as a reminder to properly destroy of sensitive documents in order to protect yourself from identity thieves. According to Attorney General Schmidt, a recent guest of KVOE’s Morning Show, identity theft is now the top crime across the country and can happen electronically through both phones and computers as well as in-person in the form of dumpster divers.
These individuals will rummage through people’s garbage seeking sensitive documents and information which they can then abuse.
Within the first few minutes of the event, workers assisted over 80 individuals according to organizers on scene. Individuals from both Emporia and surrounding areas drove through to take advantage of the assistance including Olpe resident Judy Schade (SHADY).
Schade says she has utilized events such as this in the past, and constantly takes additional steps each day to protect herself from those seeking to obtain her secure information.
Residents were able to bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to the event.
