The hay bale fire that developed south of Lebo on Tuesday is in the process of burning itself out.
Fire developed in the 500 block of 24th Road Northwest after noon, prompting a response from Coffey County Fire and Hartford-Neosho Rapids. The decision was made fairly quickly to let the hay bales burn out with a grass fire also underway nearby.
Coffey County Fire has not confirmed how the hay bales caught fire, and that information may not be available until Thursday. Initially, at least 20 bales were observed on fire. The total number of destroyed bales will likely top 100.

Coffey County and Hartford Neosho Rapids firefighters responded to a grass fire call in western Coffey County Tuesday afternoon.
Crews were dispatched to the 500 block of 24th Road Northwest, about two miles south of Lebo and six miles east of Neosho Rapids, shortly before 2 pm. A cause of the grass fire is currently under investigation, however, at least 20 hay bales were destroyed as a result.
