Just in time for a mild, calm week for area residents, the Flint Hills Smoke Management Tool is now up and running for the 2020 burn season.
Updated daily, the online tool is useful because it shows the potential general spread of smoke from rangeland burns, both to air quality monitors in Kansas and to some surrounding states like Arkansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. The model also lets you see the specific impacts of a given fire.
The model and all the background information about the Flint Hills Smoke Management plan are online at www.ksfire.org.
The current burn season hasn’t kicked off yet in full force, mainly because of the damp winter. However, the next week should see temperatures in the 50s and 60s with light to moderate winds through at least Friday. We’ll keep you updated on KVOE and KVOE.com.
