A council grove man was among five people killed in an early morning crash on Interstate 70 Sunday.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol Crash log, the accident occurred on I-70 at mile marker 341.5 in Wabaunsee County .5 miles east of Maple Hill at approximately 6:40 am. An eastbound 2001 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 20-year-old Armando David Mascote of Council Grove drove into the westbound lane for unknown reasons and collided head on with a 1999 Ford Econoline van driven by 33-year-old Jacinto Sanchez-Diaz of Topeka.
Both Mascote and Sanchez Diaz were among those killed in the accident. Three passengers in the van, 19-year-old Cervando Flores, 29-year-old Jose Luis Sanchez-Diaz and 18-year-old Francisco Daniel Rosa-Mejia, all of Topeka, also died in the collision.
A fourth passenger in the van, 37-year-old Santos Narcizo Mendoza Capetillo survived and was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka with suspected serious injuries. Mascote was listed as wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident. None of the occupants in the van were wearing safety restraints when the collision occurred.
