Emporia High Freshman Xerarch Tungjaroenkul finished in third place at 132 lbs at the 5A State Wrestling Championships Saturday.
Tungjaroenkul defeated Gabe Maki of Andover by decision. After letting his win set in for a moment, Tungjaroenkul says he’s already looking ahead to the next challenge.
Emporia sent four wrestlers to the state championships this weekend. Senior Whitney Hall made it to the second round of the consolation bracket at 220 lbs before losing by fall to Mason Ross of Wichita Northwest.
Freshman Lukas Hainline at 113 lbs and junior Ethan Garate at 170 lbs both advanced to the consolation semi-finals where both lost by fall.
Emporia High Head Coach Brook Medrano says all he wanted was for his team to give their best effort and that’s exactly what they did.
As a team, Emporia finished 20th overall. Goddard claimed the state championship, Blue Valley Southwest finished in second and Maize finished in third in the team standings.
