The Emporia State womens basketball team grinded out a 74-49 win over Northeastern State Thursday night.
The Lady Hornets used a 8-0 run to close out the first quarter and never looked back the rest of the night. They survived shooting only 37 percent for the game. Coach Toby Wynn credited the play of the players off the bench for giving them a spark.
Four players scored in double-figures led by Fredricka Sheats, who came off the bench and finished with 16 points.
Mollie Mounsey added 15, Tre’Zure Jobe finished with 12 and Grace Gordon scored 11 points. The Lady Hornets improved to 21-6 for the season and 14-4 in the MIAA. With Nebraska Kearney losing at Newman, Emporia State is tied for 2nd place in the MIAA standings.
Northeastern State won the mens game 93-76. The Hornets could not cool off the red hot Riverhawks who shot 58 percent from the floor and hit 16 threes for the game. Coach Craig Doty said Northeastern was the better team.
Four Hornets did score in double-figures. Justin Williams and Keyon Thomas both finished with 16 points. Zac Ownes added 13 points and Jumah’Ri Turner scored 11 points.
The Emporia State men fall to 10-17 for the season and 4-14 in the MIAA.
The Emporia State basketball teams will close out the regular season Saturday at home against Rogers State.
