Plumb Place Director Mary Richardson’s homemade fried tacos were a huge hit during Plumb Place’s taco feed fundraiser Saturday.
The smell of tacos filled the Emporia Recreation Center’s halls as residents filed in to help support the women’s shelter which has been working the past several months to clear past debts, what Richardson has called “high-range contracts.” This event followed last months “It’s Plumb Cold Soup and Chili feed” and Board Secretary brandy Nance says there are still more events to come.
The taco feed raised over $1,200 which exceeded the original expectation of $1,000. According to Richardson Plumb Place recently hit the halfway point on their latest funding goal of $30,000, which will be used to support Plumb Places assortment of programs and provide additional services for the women in their care.
For the past 17 months, Emporia Police has been investigating a stated loss of over $50,000 from 2014 to 2017. In October, Plumb Place said the facility was at risk of closure if it could not raise enough money to get through the end of the year. The shelter managed to clear $15,000 in general operation expenses by reaching a fundraising goal back in November before setting its current goal of $30,000.
