The race for Lyon County Commission Second District is getting more crowded.
Doug Peck, a longtime Kansas Highway Patrol trooper, is now in the race.
Peck says the budget is the top priority for the county, and he credited the current commission and department leaders for “holding the line” on spending — unlike the state, which he says had a “use it or lose it” approach. Peck served with the Highway Patrol for over 25 years, and he says he is familiar with department budgets through his work with the Kansas Peace Officers Association. He also says his family has had a longstanding commitment to the area with his children graduating from Emporia High and Emporia State University.
A Republican, Peck joins two other Republicans — business owner Robert McClelland and longtime Lyon County Planning Board member Phil Mott — on the ballot. The seat is currently held by Dan Slater.
Rollie Martin, the incumbent for the County Commission Third District, is currently running unopposed but the filing deadline isn’t until June 1. All the county’s elected officials are on the ballot this year.
