Increased reliance on renewable fuel sources, coupled with a reduction in carbon output, are the key takeaways in Evergy’s plans to meet customer needs as announced Thursday.
Spokesperson Gina Penzig tells KVOE News Evergy plans to go 80 percent below its 2005 carbon output levels by the year 2050, and by the end of this year it should be at around 40 percent reduction. Over the next 30 years, emissions will also be reduced as coal-fired energy plants get retired.
A key part of the plan, according to Penzig, is the continued operation of Wolf Creek outside Burlington until its license expires in 2045.
Evergy’s plan also includes “significant investments” to renewable energy and energy efficiency, including the purchase of wind facilities in Marion, Kingman, Bourbon and Crawford counties — thus adding over 650 megawatts of renewable power. Penzig says Evergy may also add a small amount of natural gas generation capability if more carbon-free power generation doesn’t happen by 2050.
