If you are among the masses purchasing Kansas City Chiefs apparel and other swag with the Chiefs making their first Super Bowl in 50 years, take note of this story.
The Kansas Attorney General’s Office has filed suit against two out-of-state pop-up sellers doing business in Topeka after they allegedly sold counterfeit Chiefs and Super Bowl 54 merchandise. Lawsuits were filed against Philip Colwell of Trelevant, Tennessee, operating five locations as Novelties Junior, and against Jennifer Sugg and Edward Sugg of Alabama, operating one location as Sports Connection Plus.
Attorney General Derek Schmidt says the lawsuits were filed as part of a coordinated effort involving his office, the US Department of Homeland Security, Kansas Department of Revenue and Topeka Police. Schmidt says his office served the lawsuits and seized both the items and remaining funds collected from those sales. the Department of Revenue seized taxes owed.
Schmidt is seeking a civil penalty of up to $10,000 per violation of the Kansas Consumer Protection Act and Kansas Door to Door Statutes — meaning up to $30,000 against Colwell and up to $40,000 against the Suggs.
