After watching the Kansas City Chiefs compete in the Big Game this weekend, local residents will then have a chance to score a touchdown of their own for a great cause in mid-February.
The 15th annual Emporia Polar Plunge will be taking place on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Mouse Lake located at 1220 Topeka Ave with this year’s theme being “touchdown for Special Olympics. Members of local law enforcement, who have actively been involved in the Plunge since it began here locally, joined KVOE’s Talk of Emporia Friday to preview the upcoming activities.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch had the full schedule.
Also on Friday’s segment was Kansas Special Olympics Director of Development Mitch Guthrie who says the annual event and the support of the local community means the world to Special Olympics athletes.
Guthrie also mentioned a significant change coming to this year’s plunge in terms of fundraising incentives for each team or individual. Rather than offering incentive prizes like in years past, this year Polar Plunge will be giving away a total of $13,500 in cash prizes via a raffle drawing.
Participants will be entered in the raffle based on the number of funds they raise for Special Olympics with $500 winners being announced at each plunge location and a $5,000 grand prize winner being announced on April 1. For more information or to register visit PlungeKS.org.
