A new year means it is time for everyone’s favorite activity, filing tax returns.
While this may not be the most exciting or in some cases easiest activity, Emporia State University is offering a helping hand to make it just a little easier. ESU will be hosting its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, VITA Tax, program throughout the month of February.
VITA is a program through the Internal Revenue Service run by volunteers, in this instance ESU students, who have all been trained and certified to assist with tax returns through the IRS. ESU Professor Dr. Liz Diers (Deers) oversees the program and says there are roughly 20 student volunteers taking part in this year’s program.
Diers says the program is a great hands-on high impact learning experience for all of the students involved.
Diers adds the program is completely free for anyone who comes in.
Vita Tax will be taking place Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm and Mondays from 2 pm to 5 pm throughout February at Cremer Hall on the ESU campus. ESU is also partnering with Southeast Kansas Works with the program on Wednesdays from 1 pm to 5 pm. No appointments are needed for services at Cremer Hall, however, appointments will be required for Southeast Kansas Works and can be made by calling 342-3355.
The program is only assisting with simple tax returns and anyone wishing to take advantage of the program needs to bring a photo ID as well as any paperwork which reads “important tax information.” The VITA program kicks off Saturday at 10 am on the ground floor of Kremer Hall.
