An Emporia man sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder back in 2018 has an appeal hearing before the Kansas Supreme Court Friday.
Sony Uk was found guilty of murdering his then-girlfriend Mahogany Brooks in March of 2017. Uk shot Brooks multiple times in her apartment with a shotgun.
Uk is appealing his conviction alleging incorrect jury instructions in his case. Supreme Court documents provided to KVOE News explain Uk is alleging the district court refused to instruct the jury on voluntary manslaughter including claims the district court was wrong in refusing to instruct the jury on voluntary manslaughter; as well as the jury instructions not adequately explaining premeditation requires something different than intentional conduct.
The hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 am.
