A plethora of teams swarmed the Recreation Center at Emporia State University for the Granny Basketball Southern Jamboree Saturday morning.
The event, tailored to women in their “golden years,” lasted all through Saturday beginning as early as 8:00 am. The rules used to play do not represent the basketball we know today, but more closely aligns to basketball rules of 1920 to provide an easier and stress-free match between teams.
Some of the women have been playing Granny Basketball for some time now, but that was not the case for Judy Howard of Wichita who was playing her first game of basketball in nearly 50 years. Howard played for the ICT Aerobelles and says her favorite aspect was getting together “with the gals.”
Granny Basketball has picked up popularity here locally. In Kansas, there are soon to be 11 teams with more than 110 players registered. The Southern Division of Granny Basketball covers all of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri.
The event was free to attend; however, free-will donations were accepted to benefit the Shiloh Home of Hope. For more information on granny basketball, visit Grannybasketball.com or find the Granny Basketball Fundraiser and Jamboree page on Facebook.
