Have you ever asked yourself, “how good would my grandmother be in a basketball game?” Well, Saturday you’ll get an answer.
The Granny Basketball Southern Jamboree will be taking place on the Emporia State University campus with teams from Kansas and Oklahoma. Granny basketball is a modified version of the traditional game utilizing rules from 1920 and is a popular way for women of a “certain age” to stay active, competitive and make some new friends along the way.
Jean Carder, the Southern Division Director of Officials and captain of the Louisburg Tonics highlights some of the differences in the rules from today’s game.
Carder says granny basketball is quickly rising in popularity throughout the southern division which encompasses Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas. According to Carder, Kansas has 111 registered players with 10 teams and will see more soon as an 11th team is currently forming in Overland Park.
Saturday’s games will take place at the ESU Recreation Center next to the soccer fields with doors opening at 8 am. Games will run from 8:30 am to noon with age-specific games following beginning at 1 pm.
