The Pro Disc Golf Association’s biggest major tournament is coming back to Emporia.
The World Championship will take place in late August and early September 2021. It’s the first time since 2016 that Emporia has hosted, and once again Dynamic Discs will play an integral role in the tourney’s organization. Dynamic Discs Events Coordinator Doug Bjerkaas says the track record of Dynamic Discs and Emporia was a big reason why the world championship is coming back to town.
Besides gearing up for its second run at hosting the World Championship, Emporia has hosted the Amateur Worlds in 2013 and will host the Junior Worlds for the third straight year later this summer.
Bjerkaas says there will be one major difference from the 2016 tournament to the 2021 edition. Unlike five years ago, where all the professional divisions competed, only the male open and female open will compete in Emporia. This means fewer courses will be in play. Bjerkaas anticipates play at the Emporia Country Club, Jones Gold — a combination of Jones East and West — and possibly Peter Pan.
Word on PDGA Worlds comes as Dynamic Discs continues its run-up to the annual Glass Blown Open tournament, which has preliminary activities April 25-28 and official play April 29-May 2. Bjerkaas says the announcement about Worlds will translate into more interest in GBO.
