It was not a good afternoon in Kearney, Nebraska for the Emporia State basketball teams. Nebraska Kearney avenged early season losses to the Lady Hornets and Hornets.
Nebraska Kearney won the women’s game 76-71. The Lopers took control of the game in the 3rd quarter out scoring the Lady Hornets 19-13. Emporia State trailed by 13 in the 3rd quarter and would never catch up. Kearney held onto the lead by making 10 of 12 free-throws in the 4th quarter and made 21 of 29 for the game. Kearney had 5 players score in double-figures led by Haley Simental and Maegan Holt who both scored 16 points. Holt also had a game high 11 rebounds. The Lopers out rebounded Emporia State 45-23. Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn said 2nd chance points was a big factor.
Emporia State was led by Tre’Zure Jobe with a game high 23 points. Fredricka Sheats added 13 and Mollie Mounsey finished with 11 points. The Emporia State women are now 12-4 and 5-2 in the MIAA.
Nebraska Kearney won the mens game 85-58. The Lopers turned a 2 point halftime lead into a 10 point lead and never trailed the rest of the game. Kearney made 15 three point shots in the game with 10 in the 2nd half. They also scored 25 points off of 22 Emporia State turnovers. Emporia State Coach Craig Doty said they gave the Lopers to many extra opportunities.
Kearney had 4 players score in double-figures led by Morgan Souice and Jake Walker with 18 points each. Emporia State was led by Gage McGuire with 16 points. Zac Owens finished with 11 points. The Emporia State men are now 9-7 for the season and 3-4 in the MIAA.
The Emporia State women and men return to White Auditorium Wednesday to host Newman.
