Both the Emporia State women’s and mens basketball teams could not battle thru cold shooting nights in losses at Fort Hays State Wednesday.
The Emporia State women held a 6-4 lead in the first quarter and trailed the rest of the night in a 87-55 loss at Fort Hays State. The Lady Hornets would trail by 37 points in the 4th quarter. They shot a season worst 29 percent from the floor. Mollie Mounsey scored a game high 23 points and Fredricka Sheats added 11 points as the only Lady Hornets to score in double figures. Fort Hays State had 6 players score in double-figures led by Kacey Kennett with 16 points. Fort Hays shot 59 percent from the floor and trailed for only 33 seconds of the game. Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn said they also struggled defensively.
The Lady Hornets fall to 12-3 for the season and suffer their first loss in MIAA play and are 5-1.
The Emporia State men were out scored by Fort Hays State 34-24 in the 2nd half on the way to a 56-46 loss. The Hornets connected on only 32 percent of their shots. Emporia State led 22-17 with 2 minutes to play in the first half before Fort Hays closed out the half on a 5-0 run. The Tigers would begin the 2nd half on a 10-0 run to take a lead they would not give up. Emporia State did cut the lead to 3, but that’s as close as Coach Craig Dotys Hornets would get.
Duncan Fort and Zac Owens both scored 10 points to lead the Hornets in scoring. Fort Hays shot only 34% from the floor and were led by Jared Vitztum with 17 points in picking up their first win in the MIAA this Season. The Emporia State men are now 9-5 for the season and 3-3 in the MIAA.
Both the Emporia State women and men play at Nebraska Kearney Saturday afternoon.
The Emporia State men will be playing the rest of the season without Junior Brendan Van Dyke, he suffered a torn ACL in the win over Missouri Western and is scheduled to have surgery. He was averaging 10 points and 6 rebounds a game.
