Are you ready for cashless tolling on the Kansas Turnpike?
On KVOE’s Morning Show this week, CEO Steve Hewitt said the KTA will use new cashless technology and install it up and down the highway over the next five years — including gates like Emporia and Admire-Council Grove.
If you would rather pay with cash, Hewitt says that’s an option — although you will be billed instead of paying at the gate. Hewitt also directed drivers to other payment means, one that has been longstanding and one that is brand-new.
The cashless technology will rely on KTA transponders and a new series of cameras and readers to take pictures of license plates before drivers are invoiced.
This work comes as the KTA is expanding compatibility partnerships across the country.
Hewitt also says a lot of toll collectors are “aging out,” so this becomes an opportune time to move towards technology as many of the collectors slid to customer service positions with the KTA, took other jobs altogether or retired.
