Many local organizations – each sharing goals of boosting literacy – have collaborated to bring renowned children’s books author Alastair Heim to Emporia this weekend to offer literacy expertise to families and childcare professionals.
Alastair Heim, a Kansas City resident, has written six children’s books with a seventh one scheduled for publication in 2021. Jodi Case with Mobilizing Literacy says Heim is particularly interested in aiding adults to break down barriers to literacy.
The morning event will be split into two halves:
- 9:00 am – 10:00 am — Dynamics of a Great Read Aloud
- Heim will share his insights into effective read-aloud strategies and practices to assist in literacy efforts; as well as, touch upon the Reach Out and Read platform. Childcare professionals are invited to attend.
- 10:30 am – 11:30 am — Alastair Heim Author Visit
- Heim will share his various children’s books; as well as, offer some authorship such as relaying his experiences with the writing process. Cookies and Crafts will be available, and the first 50 families will receive a free autographed book. Children and families are invited to attend.
Case says the dynamics of organizing this event was tricky, but both she and Heim were excited to collaborate.
Alastair Heim will be visiting Emporia on Saturday, Jan. 11 on the third floor of the Lyon County History Center. Both parts of the event are free to the public, and more information can be found on the Mobilizing Literacy Facebook page.
