The Dave Hollond Memorial Youth Hunt came to an end Sunday.
The participants came away with experiences they won’t soon forget, while their guides reveled in successes and offered pointers to set the stage for better hunting down the road. Cody Thurston has been a guide since the event began as the Clint Bowyer Youth Deer Management Hunt over a decade ago. He thanked Hollond for his involvement as one of the lead organizers and said he liked to pass along some of Hollond’s knowledge and spirit to his hunters.
Hunt organizer Kim Hollond says while harvesting a deer is part of the hunt, giving children the opportunity to reconnect with nature was always her husband’s main objective.
The six participants — all boys — enjoyed some of the mildest weather conditions the hunt has seen in its history. Three hunters harvested deer during the two-day hunt, which was renamed in Hollond’s memory after his sudden passing five years ago.
