Mother Nature left a rewritten record book in Emporia’s stocking for Christmas.
Christmas 2019 was the warmest Christmas on record as the daytime high temperature hit 68 degrees. That eclipsed the prior mark of 66 degrees set in 2016.
The previous record, 65 degrees, was set back in 1950 when the National Weather Service began keeping records for Emporia.
Record high temperatures fell in a lot of locations across the Central Plains and Midwest. Wichita set a new high of 68 degrees. Chicago, Des Moines, Iowa; and St. Joseph, Missouri were among a host of cities in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri to set records for the holiday.
Conditions will be sharply cooler Thursday, although the high of 47 will still be a few degrees above average. Patchy fog will be thick in spots through noon across Lyon and surrounding counties.
Several rain chances become the lead weather story for Friday and Saturday, with some residents possibly getting well over an inch of rain.
