Emporia Fire investigators continue their work after a Christmas Eve house fire in town.
Firefighters were called to 502 Whildin just after 6 pm. Fire Capt. Ron Ewing says the fire damaged a crawl space and got into a wall on the back side of the house, destroying the kitchen before it was put out.
The residents, currently unnamed, and several pets were able to get out of the house before firefighters arrived. Ramiro and Elena Ortiz own the house, according to Lyon County records.
The cause and origination point are still pending.
Separately, firefighters were dispatched to 1225 Prairie after a possible structure fire around 1:20 am Christmas Day. Fire Capt. Ben Lienneman says there was no fire, and the reason behind that call is currently unclear.
