The holiday season is now upon us with Christmas and New Year’s on the horizon, and with this comes an increase in certain theft-related crimes.
Christmastime means increased traffic in gift purchases, both in-store and online. Emporia Police Sergeant Lisa Sage recently spoke with KVOE News to provide some helpful tips on how to be extra precautious to help lower the risk of becoming a victim of these crimes. When buying gifts at the store, Sgt. Sage says the trunk is best for concealment, but there are other methods.
One growing concern, which is not only affecting the public on the national level but also locally is being wary of “porch pirates.” This term refers to one who steals packages delivered to the door or porch of a residence. “Porch pirating” crimes are much higher during the holidays, says Sgt. Sage.
The best way to combat this is to make sure you are home at the time of the package’s delivery, signing up for shipping and delivery alerts, having it delivered to your workplace, or have a neighbor/friend pick up your package if you cannot be home for the delivery.
