USD 253 Emporia now has a rough timeline for the work ahead as it prepares for major improvements at each current school building — and the construction of a new facility.
Representatives of HTK Architects and McCownGordon unveiled a four-year timetable during a special meeting Wednesday. Board president Art Gutierrez says there will be three different construction teams working simultaneously.
Work will start with renovations to Emporia High School, including a new science wing that will double as a high-wind shelter, and updates to classrooms, the Little Theater and art and music rooms. Construction of a new early learning facility to replace the aging Maynard Early Childhood Center is also among the first wave of projects. Board member Mike Crouch says it makes sense to lead off with the high school.
The physical work is the latest step in the process as voters approved a $78 million bond to address items like safety and security, renovated or new learning spaces, renovated building systems and improved parking and traffic flow. Work may start by summer 2020 after plans are finalized.
Much of the meeting was actually spent discussing the makeup of a facilities committee. The final list may be set by the board’s next meeting Jan. 8, but it could include board members, staff, community members and even some students.
