Washburn Rural out scored both the Emporia High girls and boys basketball teams Tuesday night.
In the girls game Emporia High got off to a good start leading 10-5 after the first quarter. Washburn Rural used a 12-0 run at the start of the 2nd quarter to build a 6 point lead at halftime lead and never trailed the rest of the game for a 57-49 win.
Emporia High Coach Carolyn Dorsey said it was still encouraging effort.
Gracie Gilpin led Emporia High with 12 points, all coming in the 2nd half. Mya Tovar and Emily Christensen both scored 10 points.
Washburn Rural was led by Kasey Hamilton with 25 points. Brooklyn Deleye added 19 points.
The Lady Spartans fall to 2-3 for the season.
The Emporia High boys jumped out to an early lead but Washburn Rural closed out the first quarter on a 13-7 run to build a lead they would not give up on the way to a 58-51 win.
Emporia High Coach Beau Welch said it was a better effort.
The Spartans struggled from the 3 point line making 3 of 17 three point attempts. Rural was 7 of 20 behind the arch.
Charles Snyder led Emporia High with 26 points. Beau Baumgardner added 11 points.
Washburn Rural was led by Joe Berry with 26 points. Noah Krueger finished with 16 points.
The Spartans fall to 3-2 for the season.
Both the Emporia High girls and boys host Topeka West Friday night.
