The Emporia State womens and mens basketball teams opened MIAA play with wins over Nebraska Kearney Thursday.
The Emporia State womens basketball team defeated Nebraska Kearney 70-49 in their MIAA opener Thursday.
The Lady Hornets used a 11-2 run in the first quarter to take a lead they would not give up.
The Hornets forced 31 turnovers and scored 39 points off the turnovers.
Coach Toby Wynn said they wanted to set the tone early.
Tre’Zure Jobe scored a game high 18 points to lead the Lady Hornets.
Jessica Wayne added 14 points and Morgan Laudan finished with 12 points.
With the win the Emporia State women improve to 6-2 for the season and 1-0 in the MIAA.
The Emporia State men out scored Nebraska Kearney 78-68.
Kearney had an early 3 point lead. Emporia State would use a 5-0 run to take a 19-14 lead and never trailed the rest of the night. Coach Craig Doty said there were a lot of positives.
Jumah’Ri Turner scored a game high 19 points to lead the Hornets in scoring. Mason Thiessen scored a career high 16 points while making 4 of 4 3 point shots.
Justin Wilson added 12 points.
The Hornets were able to cement the win by making 11 of 12 free throws in the final 2 minutes and 7 in a row.
With the win the Hornets improve to 6-3 for the season and 1-0 in the MIAA.
Both the Emporia State women and men will host Fort Hays State Saturday.
