With millions of drivers getting set to travel for the holiday season, local law enforcement is looking to ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, beginning Monday, will join many other local law enforcement agencies such as the Kansas Highway Patrol in the Kansas Thanksgiving Safe Arrival campaign. The campaign is funded by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation which will underwrite overtime efforts that work to keep impaired drivers off the roads.
This will include issuing tickets to drivers who are travelling or have children or passengers in their vehicle, without a safety restraint. According to a news release from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, on average three people are injured every day and one person dies every four days as a result of alcohol or drug-related crashes.
In addition, the high-visibility “Click it or Ticket” campaign is now underway as of Friday. The campaign aims to reduce the number of vehicle fatalities that occur when drivers and passengers fail to buckle up.
The high-visibility campaign will run through the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. Anyone who is spotted by law enforcement not wearing their seatbelt will be pulled over and issued a citation.
The Thanksgiving Safe Arrival Campaign will run through Dec. 1. For more information on safe travelling through the holiday season visit KTSRO.org.
