An update on the Lee Beran Recreation Center’s heating system highlighted discussions during the Emporia Recreation Commission’s monthly meeting Monday.
According to Rec Director Tom McEvoy, the heating failed on Veteran’s Day as a cold front moved through the area leading to temperatures in certain sections of the center, such as the gymnasium, to drop below 50 degrees that day. McEvoy says after an inspection they discovered the cause of the failure was a failed motor and pump within the system.
McEvoy says the failure was the result of simple wear and tear as the motor and pump were installed around seven years ago and have been running 24/7 since that time. A replacement will be installed within the coming weeks.
McEvoy says he does not know the exact cost of the replacement, however, he estimates the cost will likely be “a couple thousand dollars.”
In other business, the ERC approved revisions to commission policies including updated language and recreation center employment requirements. The ERC will hold its final board meeting of the year on Dec. 16 at 5:30 pm inside the Lee Beran Recreation Center.
