The Save the V effort took yet another step forward with a fundraising concert Saturday night.
The concert featuring the band Just Passing Through, as well as a gun raffle and 50-50 raffle, packed the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1980.
The event is now among several fundraisers to help the VFW post get back on stable financial footing after an apparently inadvertent failure to file four years’ worth of certain employee tax documents with the Internal Revenue Service led to the club being roughly $20,000 in arrears to the federal government. Post Commander Michael White says the community has stepped up since KVOE’s story broke Oct. 24 — but the club is still trying to get back to level.
White is encouraging donations of all financial amounts, and although he says the VFW “needs some big steps” at this time, he says the recent media attention has sparked club members and the community to step up.
White also says the post’s financial plight has spurred people to renew memberships or, in some cases, begin new memberships.
The VFW still has the option of selling the post building at 932 Graphic Arts Road, but White says that is a last-resort move. Once the financial situation is resolved, White says the post can concentrate on projects and events.
Totals from Saturday’s event may be available Tuesday, along with fundraising totals since the Save the V drive began in late October. The next big fundraiser for the VFW post is the Veterans for Vets disc golf tournament Nov. 23, with plans for a family-friendly event and band for that day still developing.
