The Emporia High football team out scored Newton 41-29 to advance to the second round of the 5A playoffs Friday night.
Senior running back Beau Baumgardner had another big night, scoring 1 rushing touchdown while rushing for 141 yards and caught a touchdown pass.
Senior quarterback John Miller scored 2 rushing touchdowns to go with his touchdown pass.
Connor Hoyt and Andrew Wendling also scored rushing touchdowns for the Spartans.
Emporia High Coach Corby Milleson said they survived.
Newton would finish the game with 377 yards passing on the night.
The Spartans will next play at Maize next Friday. Maize advancing after a 49-14 win over Liberal.
