Slick spots have been scattered to widespread after light snow and a thin glaze of ice Wednesday night, and the ice has led to several crashes in and around Emporia after sunrise Thursday.
Two reported injury crashes on Interstate 35 were weather-related, according to the Emporia Fire Department — although Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says nobody was taken to the hospital after the crashes at mile markers 134 and 133, respectively, between 8 and 8:30 am. A reported vehicle fire with the first crash actually turned out to be exhaust and steam from the crashed vehicle.
Slick roads have been reported in neighboring counties as well. Details about crashes in surrounding counties are developing.
5:30 am Thursday: Slick spots commonplace in, near Emporia
Slick spots abound after light snow and a thin glaze of ice Wednesday night.
Road crews have been out since midnight, according to the Emporia Police Department, but major arterials, residential streets and bridges all have icy patches Thursday morning.
Local authorities are telling drivers to be cautious and give a few extra minutes to get where you need to go, at least during the morning commute. So far, there have been no crashes in the city limits and just a handful of slideoffs on the Kansas Turnpike through Lyon County. Areawide, some slick spots have been reported on Coffey and Osage county roads.
