Abbey Johnson and Samantha Myers, juniors at Northern Heights High School, organized a fundraising walk to benefit Children’s Mercy Hospital on behalf of the school’s FCCLA chapter.
FCCLA, or Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, is a student organization common in high schools like Northern Heights, dedicated to promoting personal growth and leadership in its members. Myers says this effort is for the kids who may not be as fortunate as most with their health.
Myers was drawn to helping Children’s Mercy because the hospital helped her get through postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, a rare heart condition.
Johnson, meanwhile, says the event Sunday is the latest example of FCCLA helping fellow students or the broader community.
Several activities were part of the event besides the walk, including games, pumpkin painting and raffle.
The event raised around $300, and people also donated items like board games, books and stuffed animals.
