A celebration of past generations took place in downtown Emporia on Saturday.
The city’s second annual Dia de los Muertos celebration filled downtown with song, dance, food and togetherness. Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow club president Veronica Sotelo said turnout increased over last year, and she is grateful for the support across the entire community.
Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of past loved ones. Many scholars believe the celebration started with an Aztec festival and blended with certain Catholic traditions with Spanish explorers came to Mexico and Central America.
Elsewhere, Dia de los Muertos spans Nov. 1 and 2. Here, the celebration included a parade, food trucks, historic dancing, a Frida look-alike contest, a community ofrenda or altar and a free screening of “The Book of Life.”
Organizers are looking ahead to next year, and with the growth from last year to this year, Sotelo says there is a chance the core of activities could move from the 10 block of West Seventh to Commercial Street next year.
