With less than a month remaining before the Nov. 5 general election, USD 253 Emporia is drawing attention to the $78 million bond on the ballot through a series of open house discussions this week.
Superintendent Kevin Case, the KVOE Newsmaker guest Monday, says open houses will be held at Emporia Middle School, Maynard Early Learning Center and three elementary schools — Logan Avenue, Village and William Allen White — both Tuesday and Sunday. Open houses will be from 5:30 to 6:30 pm Tuesday and from 2:30 to 3:30 pm Sunday.
The district is seeking $78 million in bonds to be paid over nearly 30 years for improvements in several categories: safety and security, renovation or expansion of academic space, special needs opportunities and others. Case says district administrators and board members have worked hard to outline what’s needed.
Case says last week’s announcement of a lower mill levy impact — half-a-mill as opposed to the almost three mills in the original proposal — was great news because it trims some $25 dollars off the expected impact to property taxes per year. Case also says there have not been a lot of concerns brought up recently, even with some pointed concerns outlined this past summer about the overall levy impact.
