The 2019 general election is now three weeks away, and this is an important week with several events linked to the Nov. 5 election.
Voter registration formally ends at 5 pm Tuesday with the advance mail ballot process beginning Wednesday. Voters are also encouraged to take part in Lyon County’s second annual offsite voter event, which will be 9 am to 1 pm Saturday at Flinthills Mall.
On Tuesday, KVOE resumes its Candidate Forum series with candidates for the Emporia School Board. Jeremy Dorsey, Mallory Koci and Jeff Lutes appear on Tuesday’s program, while Art Gutierrez, Grant Riles and Leslie Seeley are on Thursday’s forum. Both programs start at 10:06 am on KVOE and KVOE.com.
The Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce Government Matters Committee and the Emporia League of Women Voters will have Candidate Forums this week, with Emporia School Board candidates at the Flint Hills Technical College main campus Tuesday and City Commission candidates at the college on Thursday. Both programs start at 6:30 pm.
The election features candidates for City Commission, City Council, mayor and school boards across the state. Locally, the election also has a referendum on a $78 million bond for improvements and enhancements to Emporia schools. The district has open houses coming this week. USD 389 Eureka also has a nearly $8 million facility replacement question on its ballot after the junior-senior high school’s activity center was destroyed by a tornado last year.
Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat will be on KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment at 8:45 am Tuesday to discuss the activities leading up to the general election Nov. 5.
