Lyon County Commissioners will be considering lending support to SOS as their relocation efforts continue.
SOS Director Connie Cahoone presented an update to commissioners on the SOS Stronger Together Capital Campaign Thursday morning. The campaign — which was announced earlier this year — is helping fund SOS’ purchase of the building at 1420 C of E Drive, partially occupied by KVOE, in order to consolidate all of it’s services under one roof.
According to the update, the campaign is currently sitting at $3.4 million, well ahead of the original goal of $3.1 million. However, Cahoone says in the process of gathering cost estimates for improvements and updates to the building they have discovered they may actually need somewhere around $4 million.
Cahoone made a request from the commission seeking a contribution of $50,000 towards the capital campaign. Commissioners have taken the request under consideration and plan to render a decision at a later time.
Later in their meeting commissioners approved the appointment of board members to the new Lyon County Food and Farm Council which was established earlier this year. Jasmine Linabary, along with Teresa Briggs, of Healthier Lyon County made the presentation of board members to the commission.
Linabary says there are 12 board members in total representing all areas of the food system.
The council was established to help address issues such as food insecurity and food deserts within Lyon County and other surrounding areas. The next step for the council will be conducting a food assessment locally to help pinpoint the major areas within the food system which need to be addressed.
The council meets once a month and those meetings are open to the public. For more information visit Healthier Lyon County’s Facebook page.
In other business, commissioners also approved the payment of $7,100 to the Kansas Secretary of State’s office for the 2019 ELVIS software user maintenance. The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for their weekly action session next Thursday at 8 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
