Local gas prices are on the way up, but even with geopolitical tensions halfway around the world our prices are well below where they were last year.
Gas prices were sitting between $2.28 and $2.32 a gallon as of Tuesday afternoon. Prices have gone up about seven cents a gallon by Wednesday morning after a drone attack on a Saudi refinery that knocked out roughly half the country’s daily output — and about five percent of the world’s daily oil production. Oil prices shot up 10 to 20 percent almost immediately after word came to light.
Even with the recent increases, Emporia is below the state average. Kansas AAA spokesman Shawn Steward:
Kansas gas prices are over 25 cents lower than they were a year ago.
Saudi Arabia believes it can restore that output relatively quickly and oil prices have stabilized, at least for the short term.
