A cyclist was briefly taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment before being transported to a second facility following a crash involving an SUV in east Emporia early Monday morning.
Emporia Police and EMS responded to the call for an injury accident at the intersection of 12th Ave. and East Street shortly after 9:30 am. According to a news release from Emporia Police Sgt. Lisa Sage, witnesses reported the cyclist, a 21-year-old Emporia woman, name not listed, was traveling northbound on East St. At the same time an SUV driven by a 56-year-old Emporia woman, name not listed, was traveling westbound on 12th Ave. when the cyclist reportedly did not stop at a stop sign and collided with the rear driver side of the vehicle.
According to the news release the cyclist was unconscious when EMS arrived and was taken to Newman Regional Health before being transported by a Life Save helicopter to a currently unnamed hospital. The cyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
The driver of the SUV was not injured.

A cyclist has been taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment after a crash involving an SUV in east Emporia on Monday.
The wreck happened at 12th and East shortly after 9:30 am. No other injuries have been reported. Wreck details are pending through Emporia Police.
Traffic at the intersection was partially blocked for about 30 minutes after the crash.
