The US Geological Survey says a magnitude 3.9 quake developed about 12.5 miles northwest of Cottonwood Falls just before 2:40 am. Reports of shaking activity have almost all been west of Chase County, with the most significant shaking reported near Marion, about 20 miles from the epicenter, and near Walton, about 35 miles from the epicenter. Both locations had light shaking. The closet report to Emporia has been in Council Grove, which had a weak shaking report.

This the second earthquake with a Chase County epicenter in almost a year. The first, a magnitude 2.7 quake that developed about eight miles north of Cedar Point on Oct. 3, 2018, was considered to be the first reported quake in the core KVOE listening area in decades.
