Emporia State University is getting set to host a very special guest as a part of its 2019 US Constitution Day activities next week.
During Thursday’s instalment of the ESU Buzz, ESU Department of Social Sciences chair Dr. Michael Smith announced the keynote speaker for the annual event.
Governor Kelly follows other notable keynote speakers who have attended the event including US civil rights attorney Fred Gray, retired General and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Richard Myers and Kansas Supreme Court Justice Carol Beier. Following the Governor’s address, high school students in attendance will move into several breakout sessions which Dr. Smith says contain several important lessons for the students involved.
Since its inception in 2012, the Department of Social Sciences has hosted close to 500 high school students each year for the Constitution Day Program. According to Dr. Smith, the program fulfils a requirement set forth by the Byrd Amendment of 2004 which states any educational institution that receives federal funding must hold programs for students on Constitution Day every Sept. 17.
This year’s Constitution Day will take place Tuesday inside the Memorial Union’s Webb Hall. Governor Kelly is scheduled to deliver her keynote address at 9:30 am.
Seats for the keynote address will be reserved for the high school students and sponsors in attendance. Limited overflow seating will be available in the Preston Family Room.
The keynote will be live-streamed. To access the live stream click here.
