State tax collections fared better than expected in August.
The Kansas Department of Revenue says August revenues totaled $497.2 million, almost $3 million above projections and almost $3 million more than the state collected in August 2018.
Retail sales and individual income tax collections were the main drivers. Retail taxes were $205.3 million, or about $7 million above estimates. Individual income taxes were around $231.3 million, above projections by $6.3 million. Those totals more than offset other categories like compensating use tax collections, which were at $32.6 million and nearly $2.5 million below estimates, and corporate income tax, which missed expectations by $5.4 million.
Revenue Secretary Mark Burghart says he’s encouraged by improved sales tax collections and the stability of individual income tax revenues as the fiscal year continues.
