The Emporia Community filled the Lyon County Extension Office Tuesday to celebrate the career of Family and Consumer Sciences agent Rhonda Gordon.
After 11 years as a member of the Extension office, Gordon has decided to retire to spend more time with her family and enjoy her daughter’s senior year of high school among other ventures. Before joining the extension office Gordon worked in several different fields including as a finance manager at Western Motors, marketing manager at Presbyterian Manor, a stay at home mother and an educator.
Gordon says her education background helped her greatly in her current role as an extension agent is also an educator with a wider range of age groups. Gordon says Extension was a great fit for her as a career as she actually grew up around it as her mother Ruth was the home economist in Lyon County for 10 years from the mid 70’s to early 80’s.
As for what has kept her going in extension the past several years, Gordon says she just wants to help better the local community.
Extension agent Brian Rees says Rhonda has been a great member of their team throughout the years. He says Gordon was never afraid to go above and beyond to help serve the local community.
In total Gordon has spent the past 13 years with extension during which time she has been the lead organizer for Walk Kansas, helped revive Keep It A Safe Summer and has helped relay information when the Senior Health Insurance Counselors for Kansas were in town. Gordon has also spent time as a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program educator and has spent many a day simply interacting with and answering questions from the local community.
Gordon’s final day will be on August 30.
