Organizers of the 2019 Battle of the Badges blood drive are hoping Wednesday’s strong start continues through the end Friday afternoon.
Red Cross spokesperson Susan Faler says there were almost 130 usable units of blood donated, above goal of 110. The Thursday goal is 93 usable units of blood, while the daily goal for Friday is 62.
The blood drive has law enforcement agencies and first responders for Emporia and Lyon County encouraging people to donate blood and also competing to be the county’s favorite agency. Emporia Fire, Emporia Police and Lyon County deputies have been involved for years, and ESU Police and Safety is participating for the first time. Interim Chief Jerry Cook is pleased to be involved, and he says residents can expect to see the department out and about in the community more often.
The drive will continue until 2 pm Thursday and 9 am to 3 pm Friday at Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church. Walk-ins are welcome, however, appointments are preferred and there are still slots available. To schedule an appointment, visit www.redcrossblood.org or call 800-Red Cross. Popularity contest results will not be divulged until the drive ends Friday afternoon.
