The annual friendly competition between local fire and rescue law enforcement is now underway.
The Battle of the Badges blood drive began Wednesday and day one saw a solid turnout. The annual blood drive is put on by the American Red Cross in cooperation with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department, Emporia Fire, Emporia Police, and now Emporia State University Police and Safety.
The fire department — the returning champion — has been grilling hotdogs for donors while Emporia police hand out Hershey’s kisses. Lyon County Deputies have been by donor’s sides escorting, comforting and assisting when needed.
The need for blood, according to Local Coordinator Susan Faler, is on the rise making blood drives like this of the utmost importance. Donor Tim Wiggins encourages anyone to help combat the ongoing blood shortage.
The drive will continue through Thursday and Friday. Appointments are still available for both days.
Walk-ins are welcome, however, appointments are preferred. To schedule an appointment visit redcrossblood.org or call 800-Red Cross.
