The field for Eureka mayor was cut in half after Tuesday’s primary election.
Four candidates — Stephen Coulter, Kevin Lawrence, Larry Moore and Tim Watchous were running to advance to the general election in November. Ultimately, Coulter and Lawrence advanced, with Coulter receiving 244 votes, or over half the 485 votes cast. Lawrence finished with 146 votes, Watchous was third with 66 and Moore finished with 29.
The race for Eureka mayor was the only primary election across the KVOE listening area. The general election is Nov. 5. It will include mayor, city commission, city council and school board races. It will also include USD 389 Eureka’s third try at passing a $7.5 million bond to replace the high school activity center after it was destroyed by a tornado last year. Voters approved the first effort this year but rejected it in a related vote after a clerical error was discovered.
The special election for USD 253 Emporia’s $78 million facility enhancement bond will formally take place Sept. 5. Ballots will be mailed to registered voters in the Emporia city limits Aug. 16.
