The Wheat State Elite-Gutierrez 7th grade girls basketball team won the Division 3 National Championship at the MAYB National tournament over the weekend.
The Wheat State Elite – Guiterrez finished with a 7-0 record. They defeated OK-NLU 47-42 in the Championship game. Amanda Gutierrez, one of the Coaches says this is a special group of players.
Gutierrez said all the team members are from Emporia, and that makes it extra special.
Gutierrez calls them a fundamentally sound team.
In the girls 9th and 10th grade division the Wheat State Elite-Evans team won the National Championship. Gracie Gilpin, who will be a sophomore at Emporia High this fall, is a member of that team.
