Emporia’s American Legion Post 5 was a busy place over the lunch hour Thursday as military officers from around the world stopped in town.
Over 110 foreign military officers from 90 countries made the trip from Fort Leavenworth to Emporia as part of the annual Command and General Staffing College stop in town.
Among the officers on hand was Lt. Col. Alex Asasira of Uganda. Asasira is a military police brigade commander responsible for accountability and personnel management. He tells KVOE News the training was not what he expected — and Americans are not the “complicated” people as portrayed in Uganda.
Field Studies Program Manager Mike Brettmann says the different tour stops were scheduled on purpose.
Local American Legion Post Commander Dennis Paul says the soldiers from overseas are impressed with American military service groups and the offerings they provide to veterans.
The training is a 12-month course. The current tour has also included a stop at the Eisenhower National Museum in Abilene and Cowtown, Cessna and other sights in Wichita.
Asasira says he will advise his superiors and other administrative team members to spend more time preserving the country’s history based on what he has seen in Kansas.
Emporia has been a stopping point on the Command and General Staffing College tour the last 15 years.
