Republishing of the 2019 budget was approved by Lyon County Commissioners during their weekly action session Thursday.
The purpose of the republishing is to provide commissioners budget authority to allocate additional money to the multi-year and road and bridge funds. According to Lyon County Controller Dan Williams, the multi-year fund is currently at 95 percent and the amendment to the budget will allow the county to cover remaining 2019 expenditures without incurring an audit violation.
Williams says the additional authority to the road and bridge department will help to cover the cost of road repairs needed after multiple rounds of flooding throughout the early spring and summer. The amendment will bring the multi-year fund to $3.7 million and the road and bridge fund to just over $6 million. Commissioner Scott Briggs says thankfully having these available funds on hand has been a long-time goal of the commission.
The budget has been sent off for publication and the commission will hold a hearing on August 29, one week after final approval of the 2020 budget may be given.
In other business, commissioners approved a capital outlay spending request from Lyon County District Court Administrator Ruth Wheeler to upgrade and replace computers, software and servers. According to Wheeler, the current software — Windows 7 — is set to expire in January leading the county to upgrade to Windows 10.
She says new computers are needed as many are too old to handle the new software. The work will be handled by Advantage Computers of Iola. Total cost of the work will be just over $66,000 and covers all aspects of the project. Wheeler tells KVOE News, not updating the software could make the county more susceptible to cyber-attacks.
Additionally, the commission approved the 2019 Corporate Challenge entry fee for Lyon County. The commission will meet again next Thursday at 8 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
