Progress is being made to restore power to nearly 300 Lyon-Coffey Rural Electric customers after power was knocked out due to damaging overnight storms.
Early reports had 60-mph winds near Burlington and New Strawn as part of one wave of activity shortly after midnight. Shortly before 2:30 am, Lyon-Coffey Electric said several power poles were downed after additional storms.
Over 700 outages were reported as of 8 am. Virtually all the Coffey County outages are along US Highway 75 between Interstate 35 and Burlington’s southern city limits.
At this time a little more than 200 customers remain without power.
Showers and storms are possible to likely again Thursday afternoon into the evening and overnight hours, and most of the KVOE listening area is now in a flash flood watch until 7 am Saturday. Lyon, Coffey, Greenwood, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are now included with anywhere from 1-3 inches of additional rainfall possible until sunrise Saturday.
All counties in the KVOE listening area are also in a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms with hail and high winds being the main concerns.

Over 700 Lyon-Coffey Rural Electric customers in Coffey County are without power after damaging storms overnight.
Early reports had 60-mph winds near Burlington and New Strawn as part of one wave of activity shortly after midnight. Shortly before 2:30 am, Lyon-Coffey Electric said several power poles were downed after additional storms. Virtually all the Coffey County outages are along US Highway 75.
There is currently no timetable for restoring power. Lyon-Coffey has called in all crews as it assesses the full extent of the damage.
5:45 am Thursday: Strong storms, heavy rain possible Thursday; flash flood watch expanded
Strong thunderstorms developed east of Emporia and stayed to our east overnight, but they generated a handful of severe thunderstorm warnings as well as a few severe weather reports after midnight. Similar activity is possible by mid-afternoon Thursday.
The storms triggered warnings for Coffey and Osage counties, leading to 60-mph wind gusts near Burlington and New Strawn. A fence was reported as destroyed by winds just west of Burlington. There was also quarter-sized hail west of Burlington. Power outages developed in Burlington and between Lebo and New Strawn.
